Bilingual Services vs. Interpretation Services

Many victim advocates are bilingual – fluent in both English and another language.

Being bilingual may prove a very useful skill in an advocate’s work with clients who have limited English proficiency. Being able to communicate with clients in their native or preferred language may help ensure clients fully understand the services being provided and assist with rapport-building between clients and their advocate. However, unlike being bilingual, “interpretation” is a professional qualification.

Inaccurate interpretation at any stage of the criminal justice process can negatively impact the system’s response to a sexual assault in significant ways. Bilingual advocates should generally not provide interpretation services to facilitate communication between a sexual assault victim and anyone connected to the criminal justice system. This module outlines the importance of accurate, professional interpretation and explains how inaccurate interpretation can impact the investigation and prosecution of a sexual assault case.
